Sector Benchmark

Note: Latest GHG and revenue data (based on tradingview.com) are used to calculate GHG emissions intensity by sector. The color scale of each bubble depends on the GHG intensity (GHG emissions per 1 million USD revenue). Sectors follow the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) that organize companies based on their primary business activities. The 11 sectors are : Information Technology, Health Care, Financials, Consumer Discretionary, Communication Services, Industrials, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, Real Estate, and Materials.

AstraZeneca belongs to the sector Health Care.

Science-based Targets (SBTI)

Date Published / Updated :01/10/2021

Near-term Long-Term Net Zero Standard
Targets Set : 1.5°C by FY2026, FY2030 Targets Set : 1.5°C by FY2045 Yes by FY2045
AstraZeneca is a member of the Business Ambition for 1.5 campaign (link here )

Global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY2045.

Near-Term Targets
Global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 98% by FY2026 from a FY2015 base year, and to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 50% by FY2030 from a FY2019 base year. Within this target, AstraZeneca commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy related activities, upstream leased assets and downstream leased assets 80% by FY2030; from use of sold products 95% by 2030; and from upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, business travel, employee commuting and end of life treatment of sold products 46% by FY2030, all from a 2019 base year. Furthermore, AstraZeneca commits that 95% of its suppliers by spend covering purchased goods and services and capital goods, and 50% of its suppliers by spend covering upstream transportation and distribution and business travel, will have science-based targets by FY2025.

Long-Term Targets
AstraZeneca also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by FY2045 from a FY2019 base year.

Offsets

Last update for AstraZeneca by zerotracker.net: Jan. 18, 2023
Planning to use external offset credits Not Specified
Separate targets for emission reductions and removals Yes
Conditions on use of offset credits None
Plans for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) Yes (nature-based and CCS-based removals)

Additional notes: Actor has plan ('AZ forest') to engage in reforestation as part of carbon negative target. Target of 50 million trees planted and maintained by 2025. Does not explicitely read that this will be within its target boundary, but states it 'will partner with recognised reforestation organisations and governments in a number of countries' https://www.astrazeneca.com/media-centre/press-releases/2020/astrazenecas-ambition-zero-carbon-strategy-to-eliminate-emissions-by-2025-and-be-carbon-negative-across-the-entire-value-chain-by-2030-22012020.html Actor does however have a plan to use carbon removal starting from 2026 onwards until at least 2045 to "compensate for any residual Scope 1 and 2 emission through high quality removals using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS)". https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/dam/az/Sustainability/2023/pdf/Sustainability_Report_2022.pdf Brief mention of purchasing external carbon offsets in 2018 sustainability report, but this was not kept in the 2022 edition. https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/dam/az/Sustainability/2019/Sustainability_Report_2018.pdf
