Total CO2e estimate (by Net0Tracker) | 2,566,929 |
Methodology | Pre-calculated sector intensity (revenue) |
Carbon emissions are estimated according to comparable years, intensity and sector benchmarks
Note: Latest GHG and revenue data (based on tradingview.com) are used to calculate GHG emissions intensity by sector. The color scale of each bubble depends on the GHG intensity (GHG emissions per 1 million USD revenue). Sectors follow the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) that organize companies based on their primary business activities. The 11 sectors are : Information Technology, Health Care, Financials, Consumer Discretionary, Communication Services, Industrials, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, Real Estate, and Materials.
AstraZeneca belongs to the sector Health Care.

Global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY2045. Near-Term Targets Global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 98% by FY2026 from a FY2015 base year, and to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 50% by FY2030 from a FY2019 base year. Within this target, AstraZeneca commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy related activities, upstream leased assets and downstream leased assets 80% by FY2030; from use of sold products 95% by 2030; and from upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, business travel, employee commuting and end of life treatment of sold products 46% by FY2030, all from a 2019 base year. Furthermore, AstraZeneca commits that 95% of its suppliers by spend covering purchased goods and services and capital goods, and 50% of its suppliers by spend covering upstream transportation and distribution and business travel, will have science-based targets by FY2025. Long-Term Targets AstraZeneca also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by FY2045 from a FY2019 base year.

Additional notes: More about Az forest here: https://www.astrazeneca.com/sustainability/climate-change/az-forest.html AstraZeneca has plan ('AZ forest') to engage in reforestation as part of carbon negative target. Under its AZ Forest programme, the company aims to plant and maintain 200M trees by 2030, with 9M trees planted in 2023, towards the restoration of biodivesity and natural habitats. Projects will be audited and assessed by world-leading delivery partners and independent third-party experts, including the European Forest Institute (EFI), according to the 2023 Sustainability Report. https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/dam/az/Sustainability/2024/pdf/Sustainability-Report-2023.pdf According to the 2022 Sustainability Report, the company had a plan to use carbon removal starting from 2026 onwards until at least 2045 to "compensate for any residual Scope 1 and 2 emission through high quality removals using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS)". However, this was not explicitly mentioned in the 2023 edition. https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/dam/az/Sustainability/2023/pdf/Sustainability_Report_2022.pdf In 2023, AstraZeneca secured a £100 million, 15-year biomethane offtake deal with Future Biogas to supply 100GWh of heat annually for its UK pharmaceutical manufacturing sites, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20,000 tonnes per year. This initiative, centered around an anaerobic digestion facility in Lincolnshire expected to start in early 2025, incorporates a carbon capture and storage system that will store CO2 under the North Sea. By using locally grown bioenergy crops and transferring Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates, the partnership not only addresses immediate energy needs but also promotes sustainable agriculture and positions AstraZeneca as a leader in the transition to renewable energy in the pharmaceutical industry. https://www.sustainabletimes.co.uk/post/astrazeneca-s-remarkable-100-million-deal-tapping-biomethane-from-the-lincolnshire-beccs-endeavor; https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/dam/az/Sustainability/2024/pdf/Sustainability-Report-2023.pdf Brief mention of purchasing external carbon offsets in 2018 sustainability report, but this was not kept in the 2022 and 2023 editions. https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/dam/az/Sustainability/2019/Sustainability_Report_2018.pdf
